Synopsis:

How do you turn a documentary idea into a coherent, compelling project that is ready to be presented to a potential funder? This masterclass explores the essential stages of documentary film development, with a particular focus on building a strong project from the concept stage onward.

Participants will discuss how to prepare a funding application, which elements are essential for a successful submission, and how to develop the key project materials — from the synopsis and director’s statement to the treatment and project presentation.

Particular attention will be given to the clarity of the idea and the articulation of the filmmaker’s perspective: why the intention, theme and narrative direction need to be clearly defined from the development stage, and how these elements influence a project’s chances of securing funding and co-production support.

Drawing on concrete examples from documentaries produced in Romania, the masterclass will examine different development approaches and the strategies through which projects evolved from an initial idea into completed films presented to audiences.

The session is aimed at directors, producers and anyone interested in documentary film development, whether they are at the beginning of their journey or already working on a project.
