Gianina, a young Romanian woman, works as a housekeeper for a bourgeois family in Bordeaux. In the evenings, she rehearses with an amateur theater troupe for an adaptation of Octave Mirbeau's Diary of a Chambermaid. While she cares for her employers' child, her own daughter grows up far away from her in Romania. As Christmas approaches and brings the promise of reunion, maternal absence becomes an increasingly painful wound.
